Correspondence

From the Port and Haven files

Dipping into the mundane day to day correspondence of the Sandwich Port and Haven we find the items of correspondence published below.  Sandwich will not have been alone in correspondence of this sort, but, being a mere 25 or so miles from the German occupied French coast, and with the rescue operation of Dunkirk so fresh in peoples minds, this little port would have featured high in official minds.  Especially so given the flat nature of the coastline at the very tip of east Kent - just ripe for invasion!  Then we find correspondence perhaps in connection with D-Day.

To gain entry into The Haven the blockships mentioned above would have had to be moved.  But they remain - though now long buried by the sand and mud of Shellness point as it continued it’s thousands of years progression northwards.

Therefore they would have had to dredge their way around them!
