The waters of the Port and Haven and adjacent lands are particularly rich in wild life.  They are particularly popular with Harbour Seals whose presence would suggest a healthy amount of food being available to them, both at sea and within the river.  They have even been seen as high upriver as Fordwich some 20 miles from the sea - in pure fresh water.  As a consequence the river and the estuary are designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

The Sandwich P&HC supports the provision of an SSSI and works towards it’s protection and enhancement for the benefit of the natural environment and the quiet enjoyment of river users.  Users are asked to keep noise and speed under control remembering there is an 8 knot speed limit (through the water) in force.  Considerably less though through moorings for craft that create a high level of wash at slower speeds, where the wash could cause injury to those aboard moored craft - especially if dealing with boiling water at that precise moment.  We ask those in command of such vessels, please, to observe their wash and adjust their speed downward accordingly.
